Cape Town Tourism Trends 2025: Record Growth and Future Outlook

Introduction

Cape Town's tourism sector hit new heights in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic records with over 11 million passengers processed at Cape Town International Airport and an unprecedented 11.1 million tourists visiting the Western Cape region. This surge marks Cape Town as a global tourism hotspot, having been named the best city in the world for 2025 by leading travel authorities. The city’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, and diverse attractions continue to fuel this remarkable growth, creating exceptional opportunities for property owners and investors in the vacation rental market.

Cape Town’s 2025 Tourism Growth in Numbers

• Airport Traffic: Cape Town International Airport handled over 11 million two-way passengers in 2025, a clear indicator of the city's robust tourism recovery. December alone accounted for nearly 1 million passengers, highlighting a strong peak season.
• Regional Spread: George Airport also celebrated its strongest year, processing over 911,000 passengers and spreading tourism benefits beyond the city to the wider Western Cape.
• Summer Season Peaks: The 2025/26 summer season welcomed more than 3.29 million international two-way passengers, an increase of over 687,000 compared to 2019 figures.
• Cruise and Yacht Arrivals: Over 230 cruising yachts and 70+ cruise ship calls contributed to tourism, with passenger numbers projected to rise 16% above 2024 numbers.

Key Drivers Behind the Tourism Boom

Cape Town’s natural and cultural attractions remain top draws. Iconic landmarks like Table Mountain and Cape Point mesmerize visitors, while the Atlantic Seaboard’s beaches—Camps Bay and Muizenberg—offer sun-soaked leisure. World-renowned Cape Winelands, cultural hubs such as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), and vibrant food and craft markets enrich the visitor experience. Adventure tourism, including shark cage diving, adds an adrenaline-filled dimension to the city’s offerings.

This combination propelled Cape Town to be ranked the best city worldwide in 2025 by global travel publications. Domestic tourism also flourished, with 7.8 million domestic passengers, bolstering year-round hospitality occupancy and short-term rental demand.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

While tourism numbers surged overall, challenges remain in recapturing long-haul market volumes from Europe, North America, and Asia, which currently stand at approximately 80% of pre-pandemic levels. Limited direct flight options and seasonality influence these dynamics. Cape Town lags behind mega-hubs that combine heavy business, transit, and leisure traffic, but upcoming new routes, such as São Paulo to Cape Town expected to launch in 2026, are promising signs.

Mobile location data tracked nearly half a million domestic visitors and over 13,000 international visitors, illustrating strong, regionally driven tourism patterns that bode well for ongoing growth.
